Dear Brother
65
For Gabe
Dear Brother,
I read your letter today
And cried.
Your humor,
Your compassion,
Your unconditional love,
And wise words
Brought tears to my eyes
And today I let them flow freely.
I will miss you so,
Dear brother,
And your gentle ways,
Your bright ideas,
And caring nature.
Your maturity,
Dear brother,
Will get you far—
As will your organization,
Determination,
And your dreams.
I’ve watched you grow,
Dear brother,
From baby to toddler
To teenager.
And I will enjoy,
Dear brother,
Watching you grow from teenager,
To adult,
To soldier.
Know that I am proud,
Dear brother,
To call you brother,
To call you friend--
And never forget that I love you.
Dear Brother,
I read your letter today
And cried.
But as I cried,
Dear brother,
You should know that I smiled.
Over the past seven years I have been through some really rough times. Here recently I graduated high school and as a graduation present from my mother and family my siblings and parents all decorated their own pages in a scrapbook. On the page that my brother, age fifteen, did for me he enclosed a note. The note touched my heart deeply and by the time I was done reading tears were flowing down my face and a smile played on my lips. After all that I had been through my brother still looked up to me and loved me, and the letter he had written me totally reassured me. This is the poem I wrote soon after I read my brother's letter.
